Day and night air conditioning in an instant

Day and Night Air Conditioner Reviews: (AC Price Guide 2022) (1)Day & Night is a subsidiary of the parent brand Carrier. These models are almost identical to the Comfortmaker and Tempstar, and depending on where you live, they may be more or less popular than their sibling names.

Working under the United Technologies Corporation Group, Day & Night strives to bring convenience to your home at an affordable price.

While they may not be the flashiest models or have the highest energy efficiency ratings, they are still worthy of many home installations.

The brand has 12 models to choose from and each has its own SEER rating, BTU output and control options. They even have the Premium Series that uses Ion Systems controllers to communicate wirelessly with the air handling system.

If you're looking for a decent replacement for an older device and don't want to break the bank, the Day & Night might be for you.

Cost expectations and price comparisons

When considering central air conditioners, price is one of the biggest influencing factors. There are three main costs to worry about. The first is the unit cost. Day & Night is a mid-range AC company that provides systems at affordable prices.

Most of the time, you won't spend more than $3,000 for their high-end models, and you can even drop below $2,000 for the more affordable options.

However, as a smaller company, accessibility issues mean that installation costs are slightly higher than other brands. Most brands can average between $1800 and $3000 to install. Day and night tend to add an average of $3,000 to $5,000 to your setup.

Finally, you'll also want to consider operating costs (more on that below). This is how much it will cost monthly or annually to run the system. SEER values, unit size, ambient temperatures, and even the size of your home will affect your running costs. However, you can get a decent estimate as shown in the chart below.

This is how the operating cost is calculated

Calculating operating costs will only give you an estimate. However, with the right knowledge of your electrical equipment and costs, you can get pretty close.

However, remember that there are things that affect your overall cost that you cannot predict or control: things like the time of day, humidity levels, and wind speed. All of these will affect how often the AC comes on, how long it runs, and whether it cools properly in the condenser.

However, for most people, knowing how much they will spend each month is enough. Simple formula is basically multiplication and division with many known variables. First, you'll take your system's watts and divide it by 1000. This will give you the kilowatt rating.

Then look at your electricity bill and see how much you're being charged per kilowatt hour (kWh). Some companies charge different rates on different days or even offer free overnight rates. You can account for these differences or just use the standard value to get an approximate value.

Next, determine how many hours per day your system actually runs. If it runs for 5 minutes at a time and turns on 3 times an hour, it will run for 6 hours in a 24 hour period. The average driving time is about 4 or 5 hours a day.

Finally, decide how many days you want to know the price. Most people want to know the maximum cost, so you want to run your numbers for 90 days (DST).

Then the formula looks like this:

(system kilowatts x price per kWh) x (hours per day x operating days).

if wetake national averages, a 3,500-watt system operating at 13 cents per kilowatt-hour for 5 hours per day over a 90-day period produces:

($3.5 x $0.13) x (4 x 90) = $163.80 for the summer months.

Day and Night AC Model Numbers Explained

Day & Night uses the Heil ID model classification system. It's a simple system (as it should be) that tells you everything you need to know about that particular model.

Each model has a 5-digit base number that tells the type, refrigerant, brand and SEER value.

The first digit will be a C or an N. This tells you if the model is branded (C) or basically non-branded (N). The only exception is the NH4A4 model. Here the mark has 2 digits (NH) indicating that it has no mark and is horizontal.

The second digit is also a letter that tells you about the unit's compressor. V stands for variable speed, C stands for two stage and S for single stage compressors.

The next letter informs about the type of equipment. The A stands for air conditioning, but you may also see models with an H for heat pump when considering mini-split systems.

Finally, you have the SEER number. This is a single digit representation of the SEER value for this standard. For example, a 9 means a SEER value of 19, 7 for 17 and so on.

When you select a specific model for further investigation, you will find that the individual device model numbers are larger. This will also include the BTU rating as a two-digit number (18 to 18,000 BTUs, for example) and other ratings for the type of grill (galvanized, aluminum, etc.).

Energy Performance/Viewer Rating

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a ratio between power input and BTU output. This number tells you how efficient the overall system is and how much you can expect to pay to run the equipment each year.

Higher SEER numbers mean more efficient engines that cost less to run. Day & Night offers SEER ratings of 13 to 19. Only the CVA9 has a SEER rating of 19. The second highest is SEER 17, which is shared by a few different models.

Compressor options

The compressor acts as the heart of the system, pumping and moving the refrigerant through the coils and pipes. However, it is also the biggest source of energy consumption and the biggest culprit in performance loss. Multi-speed and variable speed compressors help solve these problems and are a good investment when they can be found.

Day & night air conditioners have single stage, two stage variable speed compressors. The CVA9 has the 5-stage variable compressor and is the only model to have it. However, dual speed compressors are also very energy efficient and are available on some models.

Condenser Fan Options

When the compressor is working harder, it needs a fan to keep up with the cooling. Likewise, too high a fan speed when the compressor is slowing down can be bad. Multi-speed condenser fans work best with variable speed compressors.

When you look at Day & Night condensers, you will find that they have both gentle speed and single speed fans which are directly related to the speed capabilities of the compressor.

heating options

Heating your home is easier when you install a central HVAC unit. Day & Night package units are supplied with condenser and air compressor with integrated electric heating. You can also choose an electric oven or choose a mini-split system.

Each version has its own pros and cons, and if you're looking for high performance, mini-split systems will be your best bet. However, if you're upgrading an older mainframe, it'll be cheaper to stick with another mainframe, and the Day & Night CVA9 is easily your best bet.

Noise levels

Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB). This correlates to the noise being generated, your distance from it and your level of absolute silence. Scaling works on a variable variable, where a 10 dB sound is 10 times louder than silence, but 20 dB is 100 times louder, not 20 times.

On average, you'll find air conditioners that range between 50 and 80 on the decibel table. Day & Night is slightly louder, with models reaching up to 76dB. The CVA9 is the quietest model at 56dB, but with the NH4A4 it is the second quietest at 66dB.

Warranty and why it matters

Warranties help protect your investment if something goes wrong that is beyond your control or caused by you. Most components of an air conditioning system will be covered for a period of time and this can vary from a few years to over 20 years.

(Video) 3 Secrets HVAC Contractors Don't Want You to Know!

Day & Night offers a hassle-free warranty starting at 5 years. This warranty means a complete replacement of the capacitor instead of just the broken part. You can extend this warranty to 10 years by registering your purchase and installation within 60 days. Heat exchangers will also be covered for 20 years when registered to help protect you for longer.

Bryant Vs. Day and night

Bryant is another mid-range brand that offers many different models. With Bryant air conditioners, you get quality at an affordable price, but you pay for the installation. Like Day & Night, the units are more affordable but tend to cost more to install than other brands.

However, Bryant has a much higher SEER rating, averaging 16 SEER across its entire lineup compared to 14 SEER for Day & Night. The warranties are also largely the same, each offering 10 years of coverage. However, Day & Night has the hassle-free replacement warranty that Bryant does not.

If you want durability and high energy efficiency, Bryant is a solid choice. If, on the other hand, you want to save money on a decent air conditioning option, the Day & Night is worth a closer look.

What makes day and night equal? ›

On equinox, the sun moves across the celestial equator, which lies directly above the Earth's equator. When the sun crosses the plane, it rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west.

Why day and night are not equal? ›

Rotation of the Earth causes night and day to alternate. Since we learned that the Earth's axis is tilted and hence the equator is not facing the Sun directly, different places on Earth would experience unequal length of days and nights—not exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night all the time.

Is day and night both 12 hours? ›

Twice a year – on the March and September equinoxes – everyone worldwide supposedly receives exactly 12 hours of day and exactly 12 hours of night. But that's not precisely true. In fact, there's about 8 more minutes of daylight – at mid-temperate latitudes – on the day of an equinox.

When did day and night are same? ›

On 21st March and September 23rd, direct rays of the sun fall on the equator. At this position, neither of the poles is tilted towards the sun; so, the whole earth experiences equal days and equal nights. This is called an equinox.

How many hours of day and night are there? ›

It takes 24 hours for the Earth to turn all the way around (rotation). That makes one day and one night. At any moment, half of the world is in daytime and half is in nighttime.

What month is Earth closest to the sun? ›

Many people believe that the temperature changes because the Earth is closer to the sun in summer and farther from the sun in winter. In fact, the Earth is farthest from the sun in July and is closest to the sun in January!

What event marks the longest day of the year? ›

Although the summer solstice is the longest day of the year for that hemisphere, the dates of earliest sunrise and latest sunset vary by a few days. This is because Earth orbits the Sun in an ellipse, and its orbital speed varies slightly during the year.

Should I get a 13 or 16 SEER air conditioner? ›

If you are dealing with hot days and cool evenings you may want to consider a higher SEER amount. 13 SEER A/C units are single stage, which is cheaper initially but cost more to run in the same amount of time you'd be using the 16 SEER unit. The 16 SEER unit is two-stage, making it more efficient.

How much more efficient is 18 SEER vs 14 SEER? ›

An 18 SEER unit is about 20% more efficient than a 14 SEER. For every $100 you spend to cool your home with a 14 SEER, you could save at least $20 on your monthly bill by upgrading to the 18 SEER unit.

How much more efficient is a 16 SEER vs 14 SEER? ›

A 16 SEER AC system is approximately 13 to 14 percent more efficient than a 14 SEER unit. While energy pricing across the country fluctuates (and remember this is at maximum efficiency), a 14 percent savings would save you $13 to $14 for every $100 you spend on your energy bill now.

How much more efficient is 14 SEER vs 13 SEER? ›

Simply divide the old SEER number by the new SEER number in order to see what percentage of power the new unit uses in comparison to the old. Going from a 13 to 14 SEER unit saves about 7.2 percent in power costs.
